The real reason Call of Duty is back on Modern Warfare 2?

Being a games journalist, we tend to follow each other on Twitter. As a result, I sometimes find a nugget of hilarity among the countless tweets that pass through my Twitteriffic iphone app. One such tweet occurred the other week when Destructoid’s Nick Chester tweeted a link to a Google Trends page that graphed the search traffic for the words “Modern Warfare” and “Call of Duty”. Not that it wasn’t an obvious conclusion, but it does a very good job of illustrating a potential reason why the Call of Duty name got tacked back on to Modern Warfare 2, after the developer, Infinity Ward, wanted it taken off awhile ago.
This all came about when a photo of the box art for the 360 version of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 was leaked the other week, which raised questions about the validity of the art, since it had the Call of Duty name placed back on the logo. The photo was later confirmed to be legit. Of course, Activision later told Destructoid, in so many words, that including the Call of Duty name was part of the plan all along; not that it matters though–after how good the last one was, the game will sell no matter what.
