Beyond the Valley of the Dolls

Not to state the obvious, but John Galliano is clearly feeling groovy lately.  And why wouldn’t he?  His past few collections, both for his own label and for Christian Dior, have garnered rave reviews.  His haute couture shows are some of the best in the world.  But that grooviness was translated quite literally on Dior’s fall runway, by way of an all-too-apparent Austin Powers-meets-Valley of the Dolls theme.

Models styled like mad, big-haired mixes of Sharon Tate and Baby Jane Holzer strutted out on sky-high, candy colored stilettos and platform pumps wearing 60s staples from psychedelic-print minidresses to chunky fur coats to babydoll frocks.  Everything matched both in theme and in color - clothes, shoes, handbags, headbands, and eyeshadow.  And while all together this collection can look a little - well, a lot - costumey, the individual pieces are surprisingly wearable and shockingly modern.

Let’s face it: Dior is always in, and Galliao always has his finger on the cultural pulse.  But perhaps this collection is best when toned down?  These looks by Thread Social, Nili Lotan, and See by Chloe capture that swinging 60s vibe but are modern enough not to draw too many stares.
