Hero Worship

All day long I was dying to do only one thing- check out ALL the photos from the annual New York Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute gala. Alas, I had a crazy day and wasn’t able to fully immerse myself until this evening. At first, I was a bit underwhelmed. With this years “Superheroes” theme, pushing the envelope seemed like the obvious way to go. A “haute couture Halloween” is what I expected to find. I was taken aback by the amount of people who were dressed simple and chic in basic black and the like. However, as I combed through the images picking out my favorites I found that I had quite a few. I had to do some major editing to narrow down to these- you might even say it took superhuman strength:

I usually am not a fan of Anna Wintour’s style. Carine Roitfeld is my editrix of choice. However, I love this look from Chanel Haute Couture. She embraced the theme of the evening and looks absolutely alien fierce. The ten year old version of myself would have loved Bee Shaffer’s princess Nina Ricci gown above all others. Therefore, it gets posted.

At first I hated Wendi Deng’s Christian Lacroix dress. Then I decided I really, really liked it. My opinion of Rupert Murdoch remains unchanged. And thank you, Lake Bell, for being a superhero in this amazing Balmain dress.

Karen Elson is the most gorgeous Ginger ever; her Marc Jacobs dress is almost as exquisite. Christina Ricci, in Givenchy Haute Couture, is wearing my favorite look of the evening. The sweetheart bodysuit under baby-pink chiffon is at the same time Wonder Woman-esque, incredibly sexy and yet demure. Obsessed.

The hot pink of Aerin Lauder’s Calvin Klien collection frock could be too much in another silhouette. As is, it is chic, youthful, and flattering. Chanel Iman, in 3.1 Phillip Lim, looks adorable in matching mustard with the designer.

My own personal super-fashion-hero Lou Doillon and Consuelo Castiglioni, both in Marni. Zac Posen as Clark Kent in Superman colors, with Kate Mara, in Zac Posen. Love the bright yellow.

Marcus Wainwright, Sasha Pivovarova, and David Neville, all in Rag & Bone. Again with the bodysuit under sheer chiffon. I am enamored with this look, and the color of this gown. Amber Valletta’s Atelier Versace gown has a matching cape. Enough said.

Mary Kate and Ashley kind of have a Jekyll and Hyde thing going on (both in Diane von Furstenberg). How cute is Christian Louboutin with his BANG! boutonniere? Kate Moss and Stella McCartney, both wearing the designer, are always favorites of mine.

Maggie Gyllenhaal, in Peter Som, is another favorite. She always looks quirky yet feminine. Caroline Trentini, in vintage Thierry Mugler looks ready to fit crime as a chic Bat Girl.

Lauren Santo Domingo’s Nina Ricci gown looks like it came from Krypton. She’s with the genius Nina Ricci designer, Olivier Theyskens. I love Sophia Coppola’s drop waist Marc Jacobs dress. And I love Marc Jacobs.

I’m not sure who Alessandra Facchinetti is, but her Valentino gown is divine. Kudos. I love the unexpected cut and color of Christy Turlington Burns’ Escada dress.

I love that Julie Gilhart’s sandals are basically glorified flip flops. She is wearing Christopher Kane. I know not everyone loved Jennifer Connolly’s Balenciaga dress. But I do- I think it is funky, fierce and masculine without sacrificing sexy.

Jessica Stam’s eye makeup makes her eyes appear Storm-esque and her caped Proenza Schouler dress is lovely. The print of Raquel Zimmerman’s Thakoon dress may be too much for some, but it reminds me of Monet- I think she looks statuesque (especially next to the designer, Thakoon Panichgul) and her cat-eye makeup is divine.

Join in on the fun with this cute Wonder Woman Junk Food Tees top, it would look adorable paired with a leather mini. For a less literal homage to fashion’s big night, this Thayer Kyle cape is a great spring cover-up:

Alessandra Facchinetti is the new creative director for Valentino since Valentino himself has retired.

How could you leave out the charming Diane Kruger?! or even worse- Audrey Tautou who was looking FAB in Chanel Haute Couture!??

@ Kate: Unfortunately, I didn’t see the pics of Audrey Tautou until after my post! I think she was hiding from most of the cameras… But I agree that she looked stunning and she definitely would have been at the top of my list :) Diane Kruger looked great as well, there were just too many good looks to choose from!
