Under the Weather…

I am sick. Not in the twisted, perverse sense of the word, mind you- but the stuffy nose, aching head, coughing, need-to-load-up on Robitussin kind of sick. I never get sick so when I do I am completely miserable and want to be taken care of by my mother.

Given that she is 500 miles away, I have to suck it up and take care of myself. My feel better secrets are making myself Imagine Organic Butternut Squash Soup (obsessed), chamomile tea, and curling up on the couch with a good book or a Law & Order marathon in the most comfortable thing I can find to throw on. The key here is comfort, not style, and if your most cozy outfit is an old college sweatshirt and worn in leggings, then go for it. That being said, I believe in investing in a cute leisure outfit to wear when you are feeling like a mucus-filled coughing monster to help you get back to feeling like an actual human being.

Juicy Couture velour pants have been a comfortable staple for me since college, I love the light grey color of this pair:

For warmer weather, I love this Vera Wang camisole and shorts set:

Resort Roundup (Thus Far)

Resort is a strange, drawn out season in the fashion world. Without a designated fashion “week” it is hard to keep track of all the shows and really capture the essence of the season. While the general mood to the season is definitely ease- some designers convey this with beach wear and others with simple urban separates. Resort is definitely a luxury season, originally made for the jet set who spend their holidays traveling the globe. Yet, with more designers creating resort collections and interpreting the season differently, it is becoming more accessible and retail- friendly. While resort collections of the past were always fun to look at, drool over and dream of wearing on my fabulous fantasy vacation to St. Barts, some of the clothes coming down the runways this season I can drool over, save my pennies and actually wear on my very real week at the office. And some are still what dreams are made of. A roundup of some of my favorite looks thus far illustrates the disparate nature of the season:

(Stella McCartney, Narciso Rodriguez, Yigal Azroel, Proenza Schouler, Marc Jacobs, Alexander Wang, Luca Luca, Monique Lhuillier, Zac Posen, & Alexander Wang)

The bright pink and awesome cut of this Marc by Marc Jacobs dress are very resort worthy:

2008 CFDA Awards: American Fashion’s Big Night Out

Monday night, American fashion VIP’s came out for the 2008 CFDA Awards at the New York Public Library. The Oscar’s of fashion this year was, of course, a last minute tribute to Yves Saint Laurent. Many women arrived in his vintage designs or channeled his iconic style by wearing Le Smoking inspired ensembles. The biggest award of the night, Womenswear Designer of the Year went to Calvin Klein’s Francisco Costa, Tom Ford took home Menswear Designer of the Year and Tory Burch Accessory Designer of the Year. The Swarovski awards for womenswear, menswear and accessory went to Kate and Laura Mulleavy for Rodarte, Scott Sternberg for Band of Outsiders and Philip Crangi, respectively. At the risk of repeating myself over and over again, the best part of these evenings (especially for those of us whose invitations obviously got lost in the mail, ahem) is the fashion gawking:

Show some love for the big winners- cami by Calvin Klein, Tory Burch gladiators and Tom Ford sunglasses:

Yves Saint Laurent: Fashion Legend

Fashion legend Yves Saint Laurent died on Sunday night at the age of 71. His career in fashion spanned half a century, and his collections over the years both mirrored and influenced the changing world. A mysterious recluse, Saint Laurent personified the romantic idea of the genius fashion designer. At the age of 21 he came onto the scene as the much celebrated new designer at Christian Dior- replacing Dior himself. In the 20th Century, only Dior, Coco Chanel, Cristobel Balenciaga and Karl Lagerfeld can be considered on the same level as him for his sheer genius and lasting influence on the industry. His Rive Gauche collection in 1966 can be considered the beginning of ready-to-wear, the Le Smoking tuxedo for women pioneered androgynous looks for women, his safari collections, pop-art influenced looks in the 60’s, and luxe leisurewear such as designer denim and jumpsuits are just a few bullet-points in his immense legacy. In 2002, at his last Couture show, Saint Laurent showcased almost 300 looks that spanned his career:

The Inevitable Sex and the City Movie Post

This weekend, the moment us fashionable ladies have been awaiting for the past four years finally arrived- the release of the Sex and the City movie. My roommate and I took a break from packing up our apartment this weekend to navigate the movie theatre madness and spend a little time with our favorite foursome- Miranda, Charlotte, Samantha and Carrie. My roomie was a fitting date for the movie as the weekend we met we watched the finale together and, well, I am a little embarrassed to admit this, but we maaaay have taken the Sex and the City bus tour on a trip to NYC together. Shhhh. I won’t give away anything for those of you who haven’t seen it- except to say that I really did enjoy it, and I was a bit apprehensive that the movie would tarnish the characters that I loved so dearly. I felt that they stayed true to the women and the writing was so in sync with the show that the roomie and I found ourselves constantly guessing what would happen next- in a good way! Another aspect that was right on par was the fashion. I couldn’t help but wonder, if New York City is the fifth character, would the sixth be the clothes? Carrie and crew made name-plate necklaces, flower brooches, Fendi baquettes, Dior saddlebags, and newsboy caps (among others) trends that lasted for years and made Manolo Blahnik a household name. Just a glimpse of the fabulous fashion for your viewing pleasure:

Looking to splurge on something fabulous to commemorate the event? Manolo’s are the way to go:
