Mandate of Heaven

She kissed a girl and she liked it. Katy Perry has topped the charts with her hit single “I kissed a girl” and has played the role of the innocent young vixen to a T. With her wide blue eyes and cheeky style, Perry has become the sex kitten of the year for men (and women) across the globe. This rising star has not only become popular because of her music, but she has become a style icon in her own right. Her vintage-inspired ensembles have left many women wondering- where can I get that look?

Katy Perry credits her pin-up-girl style to the New York based company, Mandate of Heaven. This Brooklyn boutique offers feminine yet sexy pieces made out of recycled/vintage fabrics. Mandate of Heaven clothing is featured in this years Vans Warped Tour, seen on the likes of Katy Perry and up and coming artist, Paige Wood. Looking to experiment? Try out a pair of these high waisted shorts with a delicate, feminine top. Oh! And don’t forget your cherry ChapStick…

Style Icon: Mia Farrow

Mia Farrow shot to fame in Roman Polanksi’s film Rosemary’s Baby and millions of women rushed off to their hairdressers to get her pixie cut, and hiked up their hemlines in cute smock dresses and swing coats to emulate her style in the film. Today, Mia is known more for her romances with Frank Sinatra and Woody Allen, many children, and her tireless work on behalf of the people of Darfur than for her fashion savvy. Yet, I am a firm believer that true style transcends the latest fashions and “it” bags. Mia’s beauty, strength and grace shine through in the work she does to make the world a better place (you can learn more about her efforts on her site, MiaFarrow.org). And although she may spend her time pursuing a more just world, those who spend their time pursuing a more fashionable one still look to her for inspiration. Miuccia Prada, Nicolas Ghesquière and Thakoon Panichgul are just some of the designers who have named her as an inspiration for their collections.

Inches Above the Crowd

Throughout the summer I have been an avid “wedge wear-er,” opting to be at least three inches taller than the average flip-flop wearing citizen. During my summer outings, I would be the girl at the beach party prancing around in four inch wedges whilst my friends flopped around in their rubbery sandals. Why do I choose wedges over flip flops? Perhaps it’s the extra height that I enjoy, or perhaps the way wedges make your legs look three times as long. This simple shoe provides the comfort of a flat with the elevation of a high heel- sheer genius! These shoes compliment any style, any outfit, and it just plain feels better being a couple inches above the crowd. I have been rather distraught since the expiration of my Michael Kors wedges, last April (sigh.) Finding another pair to replace them has not been easy but through trial and error I have found a couple of pairs that I now absolutely adore.

Take a cue from Jennifer Aniston: Wedges give a polished look to any jeans and t-shirt ensemble.

I have these Steve Madden wedges and wear them absolutely every day. The gold goes with everything and they are also so comfortable- you will not even believe it.

Summer Braids

Summer hair is tricky. Thanks to the heat, I constantly want to have my hair off of my neck and face but get incredibly bored with the same pony-tail everyday. It’s no secret that braids are en vogue this summer and have been spotted on as many celebrity fashionistas as gladiator sandals. However, I am a bit of a braid novice, my mother always braided my hair for me when I was younger (she’s a pro at the snake braids) and for some reason my attempts at french-braids always end up inside out. So I’ve started mixing it up by twisting and braiding small sections of my hair before pulling back into the pony-tail or pulling my hair to a low side braid. I don’t worry about how neat or prom-perfect the braids are because the whole point of this summer look is to keep hair unfussy, up, and out-of-mind. Here are some cute ideas, some easier to achieve than others:

No matter how skilled you are, you’ll be doing yourself a favor if you prep your hair with Bumble and Bumble Holding Spray. This awesome hairspray gives your hair great hold but lets it move. So you can work your hair into the perfect (or perfectly messy) braids and they’ll keep for hours and hours:

Closet Case

I moved to new apartment in June and my closet still hasn’t been organized. I still have shoes and bags in boxes and haven’t quite figured out the best way to utilize the space. This leads to a much larger dilemma than the huge mess of clothes constantly strewn about, namely, I keep having the age-old crisis of closet-full-of-clothes-but-nothing-to-wear. Recently while at the nail salon I saw a woman carrying a copy of a book titled Shop Your Closet by Melanie Charlton Fascitelli and was intrigued but too busy with my copy of Interview to inquire what it was about. However, while catching up with the fashion news on Elle.com’s blog, there was a post about a party held by Elle at the Ports 1961 store in Los Angeles honoring the author. Apparently the book covers how to organize your closet and create space by reworking it logistically, store your clothes properly so that they last longer, clean out your wardrobe and get rid of stuff you don’t need as well tips on packing and much more. All so that you can “shop” your clean, organized and beautiful closet each day. I’m sold.

Hair Appliances to Love

Is it just me or is finding a good hair straightener extremely difficult? I can’t tell you how many different models I have gone through since my first one was destroyed by my clumsy roommate. I was absolutely crestfallen by the loss of my CHI ceramic hair straightener. For those of you who are as devoted to hair care as I am, I’m sure you can understand how attached a woman becomes to her hair appliances. Although I could use a blow dryer provided at the gym, I want to use mine and even when my roommate has her straightener already plugged in I will still wait the extra five minutes to plug in my own. I am ashamed to admit that I dedicate more time than I should to the care and keeping of my hair. Long hair comes with sacrifices which I am forced to make. This being said, I have had lots of experience when it comes to blow dryers, straighteners, curling irons, and even a dreaded crimper (back in the day). Through extensive research these are my picks for the best hair appliances on the market.

hai-straightner.jpg

Some straighteners simply glide over the hair, leaving those crimpy in between pieces. This HAI Ceramic Straightener grips the hair leaving every strand silky smooth. I recommend straightening your hair upside down to get added volume.curling-iron.jpg

This Hot Tools 1-1/4 inch curling iron can seriously curl even the most straight hair. The 1-1/4 inch barrel is great for soft, cascading curls.

blow-dryer.jpg
The power coming out of this Babyliss Pro Super Turbo Blow dryer is simply ridiculous. It dries my hair in half the time! It’s better to use blow dryer with more wind power than heat. I once used a blow dryer that got too hot and it singed off some of my hair. No joke- I can’t wear high pony tails anymore because a random piece of hair sticks out.

Those are my picks for the best hair appliances available on the market. I’m hoping you will enjoy them as much as I do- which I know you will because they are fabulous.

I’ll Be Your Mirror

Kate Moss graces the cover of Vogue’s August issue and gives a rare interview inside. Looking at snippet of the article on Style.com she says off-handedly that her blunt eye-grazing bangs are because she’s “into that Nico look.”

Born Christa Päffgen in Germany in 1938, Nico was a singer, song-writer, fashion model, actress, keyboard player and a Warhol Superstar. Her collaboration with the Velvet Underground (the album with the infamous Warhol banana), her romance with Lou Reed, critically acclaimed solo career, heroin addiction and tragic death have made her a legend. Her beauty, signature hairstyle and bohemian style may influence fashionistas such as Kate, but her musical talent has been an inspiration for artists as varied as Leonard Cohen, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Stevie Nicks, Patti Smith, Morrissey, and Björk.

To get Nico’s look (drastic haircut optional), try pairing a sheer nude lipstick with smudged dark kohl eyeliner. This black sweater cape from Gabriella Vencini screams Chelsea Girl to me:

Or, if you are feeling literal, you can throw on this awesome t-shirt with your Nico inspired make-up:

Small Packages

When it comes to purses, bigger is not always better. I have been fortunate enough to accumulate quite the purse collection. I have a giant Gucci which I left at my parents house and my Mom has adopted my newest Prada. My Kate Spade is collecting dust under my bed and my collection of Coach wristlets are wherever I left them when I wore them last- six years ago. There is one purse that has withstood the test of time, so much so, that I think it is actually considered vintage. This purse, I call: “Baby Fendi.” Baby Fendi is the first purse I have ever owned. My mother and I were shopping in Beverley Hills and I saw the dainty little bag out of the corner of my eye. It had the signature Fendi “F” design in light and dark brown with a tan strap. I had never owned anything designer before but it was on sale for (gasp!) one hundred dollars. I had never spent so much money on anything in my life. I used up all of my Christmas money on the purchase and didn’t take the purse out of the bright yellow shopping bag until a month later. This purse is my favorite purse, which I still use every day, almost ten years later. In Baby Fendi, there is no rustling through all of your belongings to find your keys. You don’t have to hold up the line by trying to find your wallet in a dark abyss. There is nothing to unbuckle, unhook, or untie. I can always get to my phone by the second ring and there are no complicated straps to deal with. Baby Fendi can only hold the essentials: money, credit cards, cell phone, keys, and maybe a lip gloss. It is beautiful in its petite 11 by 6 inch simplicity. Through the big, the huge, the metallic, and the patent leather, Baby Fendi is still very much in style. I recommend you pick up a petite purse of your own because some of the best things really do come in small packages.

My Baby Fendi is very similar to this one. Not only do these purses last forever, but they are so classic. They will always be in style!

Street Style

I love street style blogs, and literally can get sucked into them for hours on end. These blogs allow you to participate in the internet equivalent of one of my favorite activities- people watching. Only the internet version allows you to see what the chic women of Paris or funky fashionistas in Stockholm are wearing without paying for airfare, and some even give you a break down of the brands in a given outfit so you can make the look your own. I love seeing what women, also men, from around the world throw on for their day-to-day routines. These bloggers/ photographers capture unexpected mixes of designer and discount brands, funky accessories, and amazing international backdrops. I am also intrigued by the different photography styles and personalities of the bloggers as well as the real life moments they capture and share.

From the undisputed King of Street Style, Scott Schuman, The Sartorialist:

P.S. This woman in the black jumper, a stylist, was in my office today wearing the exact same outfit!! What a strange fashion coincidence! She told us the heels are Fendi… there is a better image of them on The Sartorialist site. They are very covetable.

The first picture has me convinced I need a wide, loud belt added to my wardrobe, such as this one from Linea Pelle:

This scared cat tank from C&C California is just as cute and cheeky as the neon cat tee from Munich:

You can leave your hat on…

No wardrobe is complete without a ridiculously large sun hat. Combined with some face swallowing sun glasses… you might as well carry around an Academy Award while you’re at it. I was in Las Vegas this past weekend and I loved all of the fabulous hats I saw by the pool. Even my friend (who is a man that knows nothing about fashion) commented on how beautiful women look in hats. Not only are hats wonderful for blocking your face from the harmful rays of the sun, but it’s kind of fun getting the, “who is she?” second glances from people on the street. I got so much use out of my wide-brimmed Eric Javitz sun-hat while vacationing on the Italian island of Capri. Amongst the extravagant yachts and tan, beautiful Italians, nothing says “I belong here” more than a fabulous wide-brimmed hat. I would throw my shirt-dress over my bathing suit with chunky gold earrings and some wedges, to get that swanky poolside look. I suggest you take a sun hat with you during your summer travels. Having trouble packing it? Try flipping the hat upside down and filling the cap with lingerie. Surround the brim with socks and t-shirts to keep it from getting mangled. There are also hats that can you can fold up for easy packing.

I love these hats!!! I know what you may be thinking, ” I will only wear a sun hat- what? once a year?” Honestly… I wear mine all the time! Invest in a good one because you will use it for years to come.
