“You Can Always Take Off The Skirt And Wear It As A Cape…”

I regularly quote, find fashion inspiration in, and immediately feel a kindred spirit towards anyone who shares my love of, the documentary Grey Gardens. I discovered this gem last year, and immediately blogged about it here. At the time, I had heard about an upcoming HBO film based upon the Beale’s lives, including the filming and aftermath of the documentary, which was to star Jessica Lange and Drew Barrymore. I’m ecstatic to have finally seen a promo for the movie (after having to miss a screening I was invited to late last year, darn it all), and it looks like it is going to be amazing! For your viewing pleasure:

Much like reading a book before seeing the movie, if you haven’t yet had the Beale experience, I highly suggest you check out the documentary before watching the HBO movie. It’s premiering next month, so hurry!!

Inspiration: Grey Gardens

Grey Gardens is a 1975 documentary depicting the everyday lives of Edith “Big Edie” Ewing Bouvier Beale and her daughter Edith “Little Edie” Bouvier Beale, who were the aunt and first cousin of Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy Onassis. The two women lived together at their mansion in East Hampton, Grey Gardens (named after the grey color of the dunes, the hue of the cement garden walls, and the sea mist) in squalor and almost total isolation. The eccentric ladies fascinated the many people who have seen the cult classic and their lives have inspired a Broadway musical, Rufus Wainwright song, an upcoming HBO movie starring Drew Barrymore, countless editorials, photoshoots and fashion collections (Zac Posen, Marc Jacobs). Little Edie’s unique personal style, head wraps, bathing suits with heels, scarves, brooches, and upside-down skirts made her a fashion icon to many; Mary Kate Olsen’s offbeat layering during her homeless chic phase was most definitely an homage to Little Edie.
