Here Comes the Sun…

Back in February, Ashley pointed out that the seasonal guidelines for fashion didn’t seem to apply tp the fall collections. The clothes were a little more lightweight, floral and feminine than what is usually expected for fall. Come September, and we are seeing the phenomenon all over again. I kept forgetting that I was looking at spring collections while checking out the looks from NYC Fashion Week. While there were definitely collections I loved, I kept getting inspired for my cold weather wardrobe, which was a little odd. Then came Luella’s collection, from the often rain-drenched London, full of spring cheer. And honestly, I could use a little right about now. The collection is bright, floral, lacy, ultra-feminine, a little tongue-in-cheek and was presented at a venue called The Crystal Palace, for Pete’s sake. A collection like this gets me excited for next spring and for fashion in general. Which is exactly as it should be.

How to Wear Red Lipstick

I can’t seem to shake off the fact that red lipstick is absolutely sexy as hell. Now that the weather is cooling down, I think red lipstick is allowed to stay in our make up bags for another year or so, don’t you agree? I say give it a try!!! Here is a how to guide to doing red lips, the right way.  1) The paler your face the bigger the pop. If you’re going to wear red lipstick you have to go easy on the blush and the eyeliner. Watch out for cheeks that are too pink because you may end up looking like a clown. 2) Red lipstick tends to bleed so in order to prevent this fashion “don’t” fill in the lips with liner first. 3) Know what type of red you are. If you have a pinkish complexion you should try a more plum shade and if you have more of a yellow tone you should try a warmer red with brown undertones.  4) Try blending. Lots of makeup designers will not rely on one shade of lipstick alone. Instead they will experiment with blending different types of red in order to get that perfect color. Mix and match to see which red works best for you.  Source for all of this information and more: about.com Dior Lipstick Try this Dior Addict Lipstick for the perfect red pout.

Now and Later: Catherine Holstein

I am not quite sure how Catherine Holstein never quite made it onto my radar until now, but I am seriously loving the casual and well edited spring 09 collection:
1.jpg4.jpg5.jpg7.jpg8.jpg15.jpg19.jpg20.jpg

While a spring collection, I definitely will be incorporating some of the sartorial aesthetics into my fall wardrobe. The post-prada knit turbans (decidedly better suited to fall than to spring) and oversized leather belts are perfect accessories over the jeans, lightweight tees and grandpa cardigans I have a feeling will be the staple of my cold weather attire. Lastly, the color story of muted khaki and pops of saturated red, periwinkle and mustard felt right on for either fall or spring.

Get the look with Catherine Holstein’s oversized yellow wool cardigan and beige sheer double pocket tee.

The Political is Fashionable

I have heard a lot of comparisons between the anticipation, competition, parties, let-downs and egos involved in the two events that are capturing the nation (well, at least as far as I am concerned): Fashion Week and the Presidential Election. While fashionable folks are being quoted weighing in on the election and pundits comment on the candidates clothing choices- I think my favorite fashion-meets-politics moment has officially arrived:

These cheeky campaign buttons, featuring slogans for our favorite catwalk queens, are being passed out in the tents and, oh man, do I wish I was there to snag myself a few! A Stam/ Donaldson ticket is one I could really get behind come this November.

Figure it Out Homeboy

For some reason I tend to associate myself with men who wear the most bizzare things. Hot pink OP shorts, soccer jerseys from the sixth grade, plaid pants from a thrift store, American flag bandana’s- and I’m only scratching the surface. Perhaps it’s because my male counterparts are young and poor, or maybe it’s because they genuinely think that the hawaiian shirt from 1993 is actually cool. Either way, let’s clean it up boys. I know you like to act like you DGAF (I’m sure you can decode what that means… you smarty pants) but why not spruce up a little. Please? At leat shower for us? If you insist on keeping that “who cares? it’s only fashion” type of attitude why not pair a stylish Fedora with those disintegrating  flip flops? At least your head (the part we women look at the most) will have some style. We’ll work on that Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle vintage t-shirt later. And no, it is not cool at all.

It Girls for Boy by Band of Outsiders

Boy by Band of Outsiders recently booked Michelle Williams to be in their Fall 08 look book. The shoot, so informal there was no hair, make-up or lighting, was shot on a 70’s era Polariod camera by designer Scott Sternberg himself and perfectly displayed the brand’s edgy basics and quirky aesthetic.

This weekend, for his spring 09 presentation, Sternberg cast Kirsten Dunst in a video installation, which ran on big screens as guests browsed through racks of the actual collection. I love the idea of a presentation where the audience gets to participate in, touch and perhaps even try on the collection! And like Williams, Dunst is a perfectly chosen ambassador for the tomboy-with-a-girly-streak brand.

The designer told WWD: “I don’t make runway clothes. These are clothes you wear on the street, so I’m just super-uncomfortable with it. It puts it in totally the wrong context — I want to do something closer to where the clothes are, and let people actually touch and feel them as opposed to seeing them on a 14-year-old anorexic model.”

Steal the look by pairing a form fitting bandage skirt, like this ultra-affordable version from Xhileration with a smart white button-down shirt. I love the cut of this version, unexpected with contrasting panels of silk and jersey, from James Perse.

The Show Must Go On

Los Angeles based, and much loved, designer Jenni Kayne is about to give birth at any moment. Therefore, her spring 09 presentation was designer-free, and most likely in an effort to be as stress-free and easy as possible, model-free as well. The minimalist and grown-up collection was displayed on stark white mannequins in a U-shape formation at Industria Studios. While the presentation lacked the star power of having the designer and models present, the collection was definitely strong enough to stand on its own.

For fall, I am coveting Jenni Kayne’s super- versatile wide crew silk tee which will look great paired with any number of bottoms.

Let the Games Begin!

It is hard to wrap my head around the fact that it is already the end of summer and New York Fashion Week is upon us again. While we say goodbye to our summer wardrobes, we also say hello to what we will all be coveting for next summer. This biannual paradox is the fashionistas favorite mind-game. What are my must-haves for fall? What on the runways must I bookmark for next spring or try frantically to mimic from my own wardrobe these last fleeting days of warm weather? But before we dive into all that, perhaps we should see what the fashionistas, hipsters, and ladies-about-town are wearing to usher in every girls favorite time of year. Some of my favorite outfits from the parties that ushered in fashion week- the Interview magazine launch party, Dazed & Confused Mini Cooper rooftop fête (where MGMT performed), and Christie’s event showcasing their recent modern art acquisitions:

Lauren Hutton already has me convinced that one of my must-haves for fall is an oxford inspired boot. This bootie from Franco Sarto and knee-high lace up from Michael Kors are great options.

So Famous.

I was attempting to keep my fame on the down low, but one of our loyal readers has exposed my secret to the world. I suppose I should come clean to everyone and finally admit that I am a famous model for an up and coming line of jeans. Ever since I stepped foot on the floor of The Magic Show in Las Vegas, things have never been the same. I walk outside and the most random people come up to me and ask, “Hey! Are you the girl from booth 456B North Hall?” I’m like… ugh! No autographs, please.  I mean one minute you’re just a simple blogger minding your own business and the next minute you’re pacing back and forth in front of a booth all day, basking in the glow stardom. I mean, I’m trying to stay humble here, but when you’re one of two hundred models aimlessly pacing the floor like a mascot, it’s hard to stay down to earth. Paris Hilton has actually been calling me to hang out. I’ve had to turn her down because as a booth girl/super model, I can’t really associate with that type of person, if you know what I mean.

No, but really, all sarcasm aside, I got to play “model”  a few weekends ago to help represent a friend’s new jean company. I felt very Carrie Bradshaw, doing the whole regular person pretending to be a model ordeal.  I’ve posted some pics from the weekend.  Move over Tyra… there’s a new Top Model in town (mmm..hmmm.)

So Janet Jackson

Doing a Janet Jackson pose to prep for a photo shoot. This picture may or may not get me fired.

Me and Ki the designer

Me and Ki the designer of Uth 8ighty denim. Not in stores yet but I’ll let you know when it comes out. Cute guy huh?

Me and Andrea

Me and fellow booth girl/BFF Andrea.

If you are interested in Uth 8ighty, shoot me an email. I can hook it up like nobody’s business. If not, check out these jeans until Uth 8ighty hits the racks.

Seven Jeans

Oh look, it’s me. Just kidding. But these Seven Jeans are quite delicious, if I do say so myself.
