Get SkinnySkinny With Organic Chocolate Soap

Okay, okay…the title is a stretch, but it caught your attention right?  If you’re already thinking of ways to dodge the calories in a couple weeks (ahem, Valentines Day) but don’t want to ditch chocolate altogether (or you want to honor your friend’s New Year’s resolution diet), check out skinnyskinny’s Organic Chocolate Soap.  I’m thoroughly impressed by this company’s ethos and their pure bars of sudsy goodness.  This particular bar contains a whopping 20% of unrefined cocoa butter, which has been known to soften wrinkles and reduce stretch marks while providing ultra hydration.  It also contains 99% certified organic ingredients.

The meaning behind the Skinny Skinny Soaps name is two-fold. Since they create products that are for “Skin” and they are located in Brooklyn, “NY” they put the two together and voila…”SkinNY”! The other reason why the name makes such great sense is because their soaps are without all the nasties that conventional soaps contain. And I’m of course happy to report that all of their products contain AT LEAST 96% certified organic ingredients! Not only are their ingredients fabulous, but they buy enough wind-power to cover their electricity usage and purchase carbon offsets for everything else. Even their packaging is 100% recycled, reclaimed and/or sustainable.  Now this is a company I dig!

Its great that the ingredients are certified organic but what about the manufacturing process? Unless a company is certified organic by the USDA there is really no way to know what percentage you’re actually getting in the finished product. You don’t know what ingredients are added during manufacturing. In this day and age, I can’t just take a company’s word for it - especially when so many of them just greenwash. For me, if a product doesn’t have the USDA organic seal, I don’t buy it. It’s simple, no seal, no deal!

    Hi Jen,

Good for you for being conscious about what you put on your skin and being a conscientious label-reader! There are some great companies out there making wonderful USDA certified bar soap, like Dr. Bronner’s and Vermont Soap Organics, for example.

There are also some really great companies that use certified organic ingredients, but haven’t become USDA certified organic (or certified by another body) because a). its too expensive or b). they aren’t comfortable with the politics involved or the standards of the USDA NOP relative to skin care at this time. The important thing is to be informed. If you only want to purchase products that are USDA certified organic…great! There are many options for you. If you’re interested in some wonderful companies & products that are not USDA certified organic yet (or don’t plan to be), but still create pure products, you’ll have more options available to you.

I agree that many companies are throwing the word “organic” all too freely and green marketing has really gotten out of hand. At the same time I don’t want to discount the small cottage industry, handmade, family-owned businesses that are crafting wonderful products. Its really all about what you’re comfortable with and where you want to spend your money. Personally, I assess the company’s ethos and the rest of their products before I feel confident about their quality and purity. With SkinnySkinny, I feel good about their ingredients and enjoy supporting this small business.
