Digital Moms on the Today Show

Digital Moms is a new series on NBC’s the Today Show. I actually first heard about this series from my friend Alli, who is mentioned in their first episode (which I’ve embedded below) You’ll probably also recognize Heather of Dooce.com if you’re a Mommy Blogger.

I normally don’t watch the Today Show (or any other morning news type show) but this really had my interest, because it brings a bit of my life to the media and says, “Hey, check out how women and moms are adapting and managing the chaos right now!” I love that, because I know there a lot of moms that are Digital Moms, and sometimes their family and friends just don’t “get it,” so it’s good to see this brought to the media and being talked about.

*edited* Well, the embed code from The Today Show’s website doesn’t seem to want to cooperate with the blog! It doesn’t look like it’s been put on YouTube yet either, so here’s a link to check it out: http://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/26184891/vp/29594799#29594799 In the meantime I’ll keep an eye out for the footage on YouTube as well.

One of the questions addressed on the show is a bit of an attention grabber. Can you go too far? Can you share too much information? And with that they mentioned that Alli and her husband shared her recent labor and childbirth via Twitter. One thing that’s important to know there is that Alli’s family was all following her on Twitter. So, twittering kept them connected and in the loop about what was going on. Admittedly the rest of us were quite curious too! I know I watched with anticipation to see how things went and of course to see when they had cute baby pics available in their Flickr feed.

Heather of Dooce.com mentioned that she does find herself being more guarded about certain information as her preschool age daughter gets older. It’s a comfort level, and I totally understand what she meant. There are great people online, we build friendships and we trust those people, but unfortunately there is always some creepy person waiting in the wings plotting something despicable.

You want your children to be safe and protected in the long term. So, it’s important to decide what level of sharing you are comfortable with, and also to discuss that with your spouse, significant other, child, and other family members. Let them know what you’re comfortable with, what not to share, and definitely make sure your child isn’t giving out personal information on the net if they are old enough for their own time online. Digital Moms lead to Digital Kids after all!

I’m definitely curious to see what else this Digital Moms series on the Today Show brings up. I’ll have to set my DVR to record so I don’t miss any important Digi-Moms ;)

I’m also curious what you think of this digital mom age? Do you consider yourself a digital mom? How does technology play into your day to day life? Is it helping you with raising your kids and organizing your family, or is it just keeping you connected to friends and family? Look forward to hearing about what technology brings to your day.
