Coby 1.5 inch Digital Photo Keychain

Coby 1.5 inch Digital Photo KeychainThe next cool little gadget in digital photo technologies is the Coby Digital Photo Keychain. Remember in all of the old television shows and movies when someone pulls out their wallet, opens it up, and rolls out a huge roll of their family photos? Well this will never happen again.

You can carry around many family photos (or just one!) with the digital keychain. Share them with friends, family, strangers, animals, anyone who you want to share them with. This little 1.5 inch photo keychain stores over 60 photos, depending on the size and resolution of the photos of course.

To keep life simple it supports all popular image formats: JPEG/JPG, GIF, and BMP. Most digital cameras capture images in one of their three formats, so you shouldn’t have a problem. In the off case that your camera uses another format (such as TIF), it isn’t very difficult to convert your photos to another format to add to your keychain.

The Digital Photo Keychain is 1.5”. It isn’t too bulky to carry around but it’s large enough that you can actually see the photos on it. It includes software for Windows (many versions of Windows, including XP and Vista) and Mac OS X. Linux users could probably run the software using WINE or another similar application, but I can’t find any confirmation of this.

You can keep your digital keychain charged by connecting to a computer, similar to how you would charge your MP3 player. This power method helps to keep the keychain light weight since it won’t require bulky batteries.

Being only 1.5”, this device has it’s natural limitations. The displays images at 128×128 pixels, similar to a cell phone. Some may want images to be displayed at a higher resolution, but then you would require a larger device.

There have been rumors that it is difficult to install the software included on Windows XP or Windows Vista. I’m pretty sure that by now there are guides across the Internet to do this correctly, but if you don’t have much experience with installing software you might want to ask someone for assistance. However, I’m not the most technically inclined person, and I didn’t have any problems setting up my keychain with our vacation pics from over the summer.

Are You Using the Right Kind of Batteries in Your Digital Camera?

No matter what digital camera you choose, chances are it’s going to need batteries. A lot of the point and shoot cameras for sale right now actually run on AA batteries. You would think that would make things easier, but that’s not always the case.

batteriesIf you’re lucky your camera will come with a nice pair of rechargeable batteries that were designed for use with your model. If no rechargeable batteries are included in your package, you may want to shop around to find a nice set. Look for package deals of batteries that come with a charger.

Of course, not everyone likes rechargeable batteries. They do keep the waste of the landfills, but you often hear complaints that the charge time isn’t very good, especially in regards to electronics and cameras. If you want to go for a long life disposable battery look for the AA batteries that are designed to go in electronics. Usually these are noticeable on the shelf because their packaging is silver or blue and quite shiny, compared to the usual black standard batteries we’re so used to seeing.

batteriesThese electronic device batteries will last about 3 to 5 times longer than a pair of the standard batteries. Whatever you do, avoid the dollar store batteries. Speaking from experience if you put a pair of dollar store AA batteries in your digital camera, it won’t even be enough juice to snap one photo. In many cases you’ll be lucky if it’s enough power to hear the hum of the power coming on. My oldest son tried several times to use dollar store batteries in his camera, which he carries with him pretty often. In the one case where he actually got to snap a picture, the result was quite dark.

It’s recommended that you never buy batteries and chargers from unknown off brands, such as you might find at dollar stores and bargain outlets. It is best to purchase your batteries and chargers from stores that have established reputation just to be on the safe side. Your camera is an investment and you want to protect it and get the longest life out of it that you can.

When looking for good batteries, you also need to consider the type of camera you are using. Not all cameras are compatible with rechargeable models, and likewise not all are compatible with standard batteries. There are still many types of cameras that are only compatible with Nickel-Cadmium type of batteries. Read the product labeling carefully to make sure you’re purchasing what your camera needs.

You can also adjust your camera usage to make your batteries last longer. For example, when you’re not using the camera flash, then you may choose to turn it off because the flash uses a great deal of battery power. Try turning off your LCD monitor when you aren’t going to be using it. You can also take advantage of the AC power when transferring or uploading pictures to your computer and give the batteries a break.

Record Your Message for Valentine’s Day

recordable photo frameThis might even be better than a digital photo frame. I think loved ones you don’t see that often will appreciate this photo gift more than anything. Grandma and Grandpap particularly spring to mind here.

You add any 5×7 or 4×6 picture to the talking photo frame and you can record up to 4 messages of 5 seconds each. Perfect for me since I have 4 kids, they could each say hello to Grandma in their own voice.

What I find most cool about this picture frame is you can match each recording to an area on the photo and press that area to hear the recording. So the gift recipient would actually touch each person in the picture to hear what special message they’ve recorded.

Of course, it also makes a great gift for yourself too. This leather photo frame looks great on the wall or on your desk, and can be displayed just about anywhere you might need a little cheering up throughout the day. What could be better on a boring day at the office than hearing your toddler laugh, or your husband say “I love you.

Digital Photo Frames for Valentine’s Day Love

digital photo frame and keychain for valentines dayPhoto frames with pictures in them are probably among the most popular Valentine’s Day gifts, right up there with chocolate and flowers. Of course, with the growing popularity of digital photo frames, why give one photo when you give 100?

This cute little digital photo frame bundle gives your sweetie and 7 inch digital frame for the sofa table or on top of the desk, plus the added fun of a miniature keychain frame. Okay, so the keychain frame is a little on the cheesy side since it’s heart shaped, but it’s Valentine’s Day and we’ll allow a little cheese to seep through into our gadgets.

The standing photo frame actually comes with an interchangeable faceplate that you can change out just for Valentine’s Day, or you can stick with the basic red. Personally, I like the red. It’s not your typical boring black look at me I’m a picture frame sitting on the shelf. It’s fun, it pops, and it shows you pictures of things you love. All the things a photo frame really should be. Your standing picture frame supports memory stick, SD, MultiMediaCard, and Compact Flash (I and II) formats.

Your keychain frame on the other hand is tiny and cute, as keychains should be.  The 1.5 inch keychain actually stores abround 60 JPEG format photos, so not too bad. Definitely better than those old plastic sleeve billfolds we used to carry around when we were kids. You know you remember those, when you stuck all your friends school pictures in there until you had 100 of these little blue background photos hanging out of your little photo holder.

Enough balthering from me, get out there and find your sweetie a great gift. If a picture is worth 1,000 words, your gift of two digital photo frames is surely going to speak volumes about how much you care. What does your Valentine’s gift say?

Canon PowerShot A590 IS Digital Camera

canon power shot a590The Canon PowerShot A590 IS Digital Camera is an 8.0 megapixel camera that is easy to use. Allowing 4x optical image stabilized zoom, it is a camera that is powerful enough to take professional photos, but easy enough to use for a beginner to pick it up and start snapping photos in seconds.

View photos or scope out the perfect picture with the camera’s 2.5 inch LCD screen. The camera is suitable for any type of photography, with many supported exposure control types: beach, kids & pets, night snapshot, snow, landscape, portrait mode, aquarium, fireworks, night scene, sunset, indoor, and foliage. Weighing in at only a fraction of a pound, and measuring at only 3.7 x 1.6 x 2.5 inches, the camera can go just about anywhere and take just about any picture.

2gb sd cardWith built-in flash, a good shot can be taken under any circumstance. The camera saves photos under the JPEG image type, which is, of course, widely supported by Windows systems, Mac systems, and Linux systems. Images are saved onto SD memory cards, which aren’t included. SD cards aren’t very expensive, you can grab a 2GB for about $7.00. It’s a must have item if you want to use your PowerShot to it’s full extent. A good point about the SD cards is that it allows for expansion. If you are finding that your 2GB card is filling up too fast, you can upgrade to a larger size with ease.

The Canon PowerShot A590 IS Digital Camera packs a punch for only around $110, and is the perfect gift for the aspiring photographer that is looking for a professional grade camera.

Digital Cameras for the Younger Crowd (much younger)

The season of giving is upon us and this particular gift is for the little one in your life that wants to be like mommy or daddy. My kids are always asking me to use my camera. “Can I take a picture too, mom?” is a phrase I hear often. This sparked me to get my kids their own cameras last year, and let me tell you it was the best decision I ever made.

vtech kidizoomThere are plenty of cameras out there for kids these days, and there is definitely no shortage on cuteness! Even if your child is still in the toddler stages you can get them a digital camera to take their own pics. VTech’s Kidizoom DigitalCamera has features for those little hands, like chunky handles and big easy to use buttons.

See the world through your toddler’s eyes when you plug this into your home TV or PC and flip through the photos they’ve taken. Camera has a built in memory of 120 photos, or 5 minutes of video.  If your little one is the ambitiious type there’s also an SD card slot for more storage space and longer video clips.

Comes with photo editing software just like mom and dad’s camera did. Let them customize their photos when they’ve snapped to their hearts content. Then email a few shots off to grandma and Aunt Eileen!

And something mom and dad’s camera doesn’t have … games! There are three games included (built in), plus a headset that plugs into the side of the camera.  These are preschool targeted games with fun and education in mind. After all, would you expect anything but the best from VTech for your kids?

Leica Brown Leather Camera Bag

sunday's bag

brown leather camera caseI chose today’s bag because it reminded of an old fashioned camera case brought into the modern day. The brown leather design is simple, but elegant. And, of course, the sturdy leather protects your camera.

This camera case features a magnetic closure to help make sure it’s always closed. The removable leather shoulder strap lets you choose how to carry this case. You can remove the strap and toss the case in your purse or tote bag, or you can leave it attached and carry it solo, giving you plenty of camera carrying flexibility.

I found the style to be reminiscent of what my dad had for his camera when I was little. He was always snapping pictures and showing me how to use different lenses and filters on the camera. I wish a little more of his camera-smarts had rubbed off on me. I’m definitely more of a point and shoot kind of gal.

Getting the Picture

This year I dove head first into the wonderful world of photography.  Okay, so I’m not that good at it yet, but I am getting better.  The first thing I learned is that a camera isn’t just a camera.  I used to think that any point and shoot camera would do just fine.  Then when my camera died on me in the early spring I decided I would go out there and compare cameras and get serious about my picture taking.

canon s5 digital cameraI shopped around, read photography and camera blogs, compared cameras, and talked to other photographers online.  I came up with a great recommendation for the Canon Powershot S5.  My friend Alli had the previous model and very much loved it, and after reading some reviews online I decided the S5 was perfect for me.  It’s as close as you can get to having an SLR camera, but with all the ease of a point and shoot camera!  It literally is the best of both photography worlds.

On a recent trip to the Pittsburgh Zoo & Aquarium I really put my camera to the test. There were crows of people to see all the recent new additions to the zoo. A baby tiger, two baby elephants, and plenty of other babies to be seen! It was hard to get up close in some of the viewing areas, especially to see the elephants! There was a large crowd gathered in all three viewing areas for the elephants.

Everyone was trying to get close to the front to snap pictures of the baby elephants while they played in the wet clay. I was way in the back and didn’t feel like pushing through to the front and then fighting to get back out again. But, that didn’t stop me from getting great pictures!

I flipped open my viewing screen, held my camera up high enough that I could see over people’s heads and snapped away. A few of my shots did end up with random people’s hair in the view, but for the most part I got some good pictures without even trying hard.

My old camera would have never been able to zoom in like that and get the shot from far away. I have to say that I’m really pleased with my Canon Powershot S5, it gets the job done and makes me look good even when I have no idea what I’m doing.

Polaroid PoGo Instant Mobile Printer

polaroid pogo photo printerCameras and photography have come a long way and Polaroid is a very familiar name in photos. It took them awhile to get on the digital bandwagon, but when they did they did so with style.

Everything else is mobile, why shouldn’t your photo printer be mobile too? We snap away with our digital cameras on a daily basis. If you’re anything like me, you probably hardly ever order prints. Sometimes I forget, sometimes I just put it off. It was probably a year after our trip to Disney World that I ordered physical prints for our photo album on the shelf. But, I had a digital album up online before we even came home! At least I remember to do that most of the time.

The Polaroid PoGo prints 2 x 3-inch borderless color images in under a minute. And the coolest part is that it does so without any messy ink cartridges! Printing is done using ZINK Zero Ink Printing Technology from ZINK Imaging.

Using your camera phone you can wirelessly transfer images from a Bluetooth-enabled camera phone to the Mobile Printer and print instantly. Using the built-in OBEX (object exchange profile) Bluetooth in the phone and the printer, connecting and printing becomes instant.

Or you can use it with your digital camera, of course. Just hook up the USB cable to the PictBridge-enabled camera and printer. Once connected, follow the PictBridge screen on the camera display. Simply select what image to send to the printer and within 60 seconds, the print is ready to be shared. Easy peasy…. and super fast. What could be better?

Perfect for sporting events, graduation parties, wedding receptions and just about any event where you want to take pictures. Print and share photos right away, no waiting until later for film to get developed, no emailing big zip files, and no waiting in line to pick up your pics at the store either.
